Our Mission
The purpose of Athens-Clarke County Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Program is to provide victim forensic examinations and evidence collection, court testimony, and community prevention education related to rape, sexual and physical assault. ACC-SANE Program functions as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 agency and is currently governed by a board of directors.
Sexual Assault Examiners
SANE nurses and SAFE (sexual assault forensic examiners) are medical professionals who have completed specialized training in the evaluation and forensic examination of adult, adolescent and child victims of sexual assault and abuse. SANE nurses participate in a 24hour/7 day a week On-Call Rotation. In addition to examinations, nurses also provide expert witness testimony in criminal proceedings.
Child Abuse Examiners
The Child Abuse Medical Network providers are Child Abuse Examiners who have completed specialized training with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to conduct child physical abuse examinations. Providers in the Medical Network also serve as fact and expert witnesses in deprivation and criminal proceedings.
Sane Support Staff
The SANE Clinical Coordinator and Medical Response & Aftercare Advocate provides coordination of the SANE call schedule, maintenance of the exam and waiting rooms, medical accompaniment for patients and their families and assistance post forensic medical examinations.
Advocates
On Call Advocates participate in a 24hour/7 day a week On Call Rotation to provide emergency accompaniments for forensic medical exams.
