Helping Survivors of Sexual Assault and Abuse

You Are Not Alone!

Since June of 2006, SANE has been conducting forensic examinations in the Athens-Clarke County Family Protection Center. SANE has recently opened another Family Protection Center in Morgan County and one will open soon in Bogart. The Family Protection Centers facilitate collaborative services from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Clarke County Department of Family and Children Services, SANE, Project Safe, the Sexual Assault Center of Northeast Georgia, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, and the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office and the Clarke County Solicitor-General’s Office. SANE, Inc. provides space for these multidisciplinary agencies and is used to conduct physical examinations of victims, record adult and child forensic interviews, provide family and individual counseling, and carry out the criminal investigations and prosecutorial efforts necessary to address crimes and child abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence in the community. All 13 counties served by SANE receive services at one of three Family Protection Centers located in Athens, Morgan County, and soon, Bogart.

We provide services at no cost to the victim’s family in accordance with state and federal laws. SANE works collaboratively with various law enforcement agencies, prosecutors’ offices, advocacy organizations and the Department of Family and Children Services in multiple counties.

Conducting Forensic Interviews

Forensic interviews are provided to children who may have experienced abuse or who have witnessed a crime or other violent act. A forensic interview is a single session, recorded interview designed to elicit a child’s unique information when there are concerns of possible abuse or when the child has witnessed violence against another person. The forensic interview is conducted in a supportive and non-leading manner by a trained professional. Interviews are remotely observed by representatives of the agencies involved in the investigation (such as law enforcement and child protective services).
