PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To coordinate all clinical activities of the Forensic Nurse Medical Examination Program. This includes the development, implementation, and evaluation of the FME program, recruitment, hiring and orientation of FME applicants. Research and update curriculum ensuring current practice. To improve the quality of care received by victims of violent crimes through direct and indirect patient care, professional and public education, consultation, development of standards and protocols, interdisciplinary collaboration, and research.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for coordination of recruitment and orientation to the FME program.
- Responsible for the development, coordination and evaluation of educational activities related to the FME program. Functions in a teaching and collaborative role.
- Functions as a role model in patient care, provides a high level of clinical expertise by selecting and preparing nurses for the FME role.
- Participates in programs to promote recruitment, and development of FME program.
- Develops and maintains appropriate departmental polices related to the FME program.
- Collects statistics related to forensic medical patients.
- Prepares and manages forensic medical supply inventory to include medications and examination supplies, equipment, and indirect costs and communicates with the Executive Director to make purchases and budget recommendations.
- Considers cost containment and efficiency related to the program.
- Maintains Knowledge of current clinical concepts and practices.
- Testifies in court as an expert and assist other Forensic Nurses in preparing for court testimony.
- Works collaboratively with law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys offices and local victims services.
- Establishes and maintains ongoing collaborative relationships within the Emergency Department and all departments within the organization.
- Aware of regulatory standards, requirements and assists in facilitation of implementation and compliance to same.
- Works within the community to educate on FME program and violence prevention.
- Participates in strategy and sustainability planning, goal setting, program development and evaluation for the FME program.
- Acts as a 24 hour on-call resource to program participants.
- Catalyzes and facilitates change to enhance professionalism, efficiency, competency and cost containment within the FME program.
- Preforms assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices, reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
- Responsible for receiving and coordinating subpoenas directed to FME team.
- Preforms other related duties as required.
SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
- Daily Contacts with employees, patients, family members, visitors, medical staff, volunteers, students as well as the general public.
- Frequent contact with personnel of community agencies, hospitals, local law enforcement including; local police department, sheriff’s office, prosecutor’s office, child protective services, adult protective services and any other agencies that are victim oriented.
DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:
- Responsible for coordination of exam and advocacy call schedules and evaluation of contractors on the Forensic Examiners Team.
DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
- Executive Director of the organization and Medical Advisor of the Forensic Medical Program.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing BSN.
- At two years of patient care/nursing experience.
- Experience functioning as a Forensic Nurse Examiner preferred.
- Completed an approved sexual assault nurse examiners program preferred. Applicants who have not completed this training will be required to attend an approved training selected by SANE, Inc. and complete clinicals with in 6 months from hire.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Current RN licensure in the state of Georgia, BCLS certification required.
- Completion of a clinical Forensic nurse certificate program preferred.
- Certification in adult/adolescent and/or pediatric sexual assault exams and forensic nursing preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Occasional to frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, handling as per unit based on physical demands checklist.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Frequent exposure to biological elements with occasional exposure to chemical and environmental elements as per unit based physical demands checklist.
- Occasional travel is required.
